Clubs & Extracurricular Activities

Below is an overview of the clubs and extracurricular activities students at Southwest are encouraged to participate in. Please contact the teacher in charge directly to find out learn more.

Battle of the Books & Southwest Book Club

For students in grades 3, 4, and 5 who love all things books, Southwest has two opportunities for students who complete class and homework regularly, who enjoy reading, and who are willing to follow codes of conducts. Both programs are reading and discussing the same books, so it isn’t recommended for children to attend both.

Both groups meet in the Media Center from 8:00 – 8:30 am, on different days.

  • Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 3-5. The purpose is simply to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers.

  • Southwest Book Club
The Southwest Elementary book club is open to all students in grades 3-5 students who love all things books. Participation is limited to 20 students on a first-come, first-serve basis, and the application deadline is October 1.

School Chorus Program: Southwest Singers

All children in grades 3-5 are invited to become a member of the Southwest Elementary Chorus. Our chorus students will be performing a wonderful variety of musical selections spanning hundreds of years and many genres. They will be learning proper choral singing technique, proper concert etiquette, and how to sing harmony. The Southwest Singers have many opportunities throughout the school year to perform, including concerts at school and around the community. Our students even have the opportunity to be selected to perform in the Evening of Entertainment Honors Chorus.

The Chorus rehearses on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30 – 8:20 am in the music room, beginning in mid-October. If children catch the bus, they can come straight to rehearsal once they arrive, and can eat breakfast in their classroom after rehearsal.

Theatre Club: Southwest Players

The Southwest Players is a process-oriented before-school drama club in which students rehearse and perform scripted plays and musicals. Students in the Drama Club learn the basics of stagecraft, self-discipline, and the importance of hard work, creativity, and imaginative play, listening and observation skills, and self-confidence. Each year, the Southwest Players will perform a play and put on a musical.

The Southwest Players meet on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 7:30 – 8:20 am, beginning in mid-October. If children catch the bus, they can come straight to rehearsal once they arrive, and can eat breakfast in their classroom after rehearsal.
